Old Billingsgate equipped with new Soundcraft Vi1 digital console and Martin Audio Mini Line Array

Old Billingsgate has a revamped audio solution based on Harman Professional brands – including JBL self-powered monitors and a Soundcraft Vi1 console – and a Martin Audio W8LM Mini Line Array with WLX subwoofers.

London-based multimedia company LCI has equipped events venue Old Billingsgate with a professional audio solution centred on Martin Audio Mini Line Array and Harman Professional brands – inclusive of a Soundcraft Vi1 digital console.

Within the facility, which looks over the River Thames, is the 28,000sqft (2,600sqm) cavernous main hall. With its triple height ceilings and a mezzanine, the space can host sit-down dinners and conferences for in excess of 1,000 people. The spec for LCI was to create a flexible integrated multimedia system that could be utilised by both incoming production companies and smaller events clients using the space.

Supplied by Harman Professional UK and Ireland distributors, Sound Technology, the main hall was equipped with 14 JBL PRX 615M self-powered monitors as delay speakers, while a number of JBL Control Pros were also deployed to provide audio coverage on the upper and lower mezzanine levels of the Grade II-listed building, with power for the system from Crown CDI1000D amplifiers. In addition, completing Harman’s offering, is a Soundcraft Vi1 digital console – chosen “for its highly intuitive operation, its pure sounding processing and the sheer capacity of such a physically compact desk,” remarks Carl Miller, LCI project manager.

With speed of rigging and derigging an important factor in the space’s operation, LCI specified two left/right hangs of Martin Audio line array, each comprising five W8LM elements and a W8LMD (both bi-amped) downfill unit per side, powered by a total of four MA5.2K DSP amplifiers — supplied by Capital Sound. Meanwhile a pair of Martin Audio WLX subwoofers powered by an MA12K DSP amplifier drive bass.

In addition to providing audio tie lines and patch bays to enable easy augmentation of the house PA, LCI has shown the same flexibility and attention to detail in specifying and cabling the video projection and lighting infrastructure, which is again built around industry standard tools, and includes 72 ways of dimmable power and 72 ways of hard power, with DMX and Data circuits provided to all areas via careful cable management.
