N_gre initially chose a lighting concept where outdoor IP65-rated 575W fixtures could be used for image projection within the project. However, after failing to convince one company to manufacture the required luminaire, Martin Professional succeeded in modifying its Exterior 600 luminaire to N_gre’s wishes. It modified the IP65-rated automated colour-changing washlight with the addition of a gobo pattern holder.
On the south-facing side of the castle, Exterior 600s were used to project motifs and figurative forms across the walls. Forty-nine special 575W Exterior 600 image projectors were used, while seven standard Exterior 600 washlights were incorporated, with most being positioned in front of the bastion face and on the sides of adjacent ditches.
Jean-Pierre Ferreira, Martin Architectural marketing manager at Martin France, said: “Based on the concept and the reflections of the lighting designers – Pierre N_gre and Sylvie Sieg – we developed with Pierre N_gre some 575W IP65 projectors in order to meet the projects objectives, which were to structure the project by giving it a direction of lights and also a symbolic red thread, which guides the spectators on a initiatory journey all around the castle.
“A certain level of co-operation with the lighting designers was needed to arrive at such a result. All the fixed images were realised with this same equipment in order to accentuate the remarkable elements of the architecture.”
The Ch_teau des Ducs de Bretagne illumination recently won an architectural lighting prize – Prix du Patrimoine B_ti – for its outstanding lighting concept.
