Leyard LED screen forms centrepiece of Danish Film Institute’s rooftop installation

Danish Film Institute chose the Leyard Luminate Ultra 1.5 as its main cinema screen for the 1,700sqm rooftop terrace, at its Filmhuset building, in the heart of Copenhagen, Denmark

The installation of a Leyard LED screen on the rooftop forms the cinematic centrepiece of a complete renovation of the Danish Film Institute (DFI) building, Filmhuset, in the heart of Copenhagen, Denmark. The rooftop benefits from panoramic views of the city, making it the ideal place for a modern roof terrace.

From concept to realisation, the process of transforming this underutilised space into a 1,700sqm terrace was a long journey, but now a Leyard Luminate Ultra Series 1.5 mm LED screen is at the heart of the rooftop, also featuring a bar, eatery, exhibition space, children’s play area and two outdoor Videotheques – cozy, covered booths for watching movies on large touchscreens. The DFI believes the whole terrace is now a destination that the entire community, including film buffs, will enjoy.

DFI chose the Leyard Luminate Ultra 1.5 as its main cinema screen due to its suitability for outdoor use, with an IP66 weatherproof rating, dual power supply, and ultra-wide viewing angle, matching their specifications. The LED wall measures 6.5m wide by 2.5m high.

As part of a new generation of high-end, fine-pitch outdoor HD solutions, the 4K LED screen features an all-in-one high-strength frame design, a high-precision seamless splicing cabinet and ultra-high image quality.

The cinema seats 127 people and features a retractable roof and removable sides, providing protection from the elements. It has built-in controls that automatically adjust to the ambient environment. When the sun shines, the screen’s brightness is adjusted to ensure the experience mirrors that of an indoor cinema. Venue staff simply press play, and the sensors handle the rest.

Christian Dannevang, director of business development, AVC, and project manager for the installation, commented: “In the summertime, it’s a great place to be. There’s a café on the roof where you can buy food and drinks. We did the entire installation including the screen, audio, lights, everything. It’s designed similarly to an indoor cinema but with loudspeakers built for outdoor use and intelligent sound design to minimise disturbance to the neighbours.”

Kenneth Just, manager at DFI, concluded: “We are experiencing the ability to showcase films at a high technical level with a different display technology than we know from our traditional cinema halls. The LED screen enables us to show films outdoors, even in daylight. Our guests express great joy at the outdoor screenings under the open sky, with views over the city’s rooftops.”
