L-Acoustics A Series loudspeakers have been deployed in a major upgrade at Bierkönig, a well-known live venue and beer garden in Mallorca’s Playa de Palma, in Spain. Integration specialists RheinlandAkustik and Babbel & Haeger led the six-month installation – completed this summer – transforming the main 2,000-capacity performance hall with a decentralised audio system tailored to the venue’s structural constraints.
Low ceiling heights and irregular architecture prevented the use of traditional PA arrays. Instead, the teams turned to L-Acoustics’ Panflex-enabled A Series for precise directivity and flexible deployment. Panflex is a patented technology that allows users to customise the horizontal directivity of the speaker to suit the acoustic needs of a space. It is designed to give the A Series the flexibility to adapt to difficult room geometries and constraints, making it appropriate for the Bierkönig installation.
Soundvision software was also used extensively for modelling speaker placement and coverage, supported by the Cable Length Acceptance tool to assist with system planning.
The configuration includes four PA lines combining A15i and A10i Wide and Focus units, alongside KS21i subs for low-frequency reinforcement, with two cardioid pairs for directional control. Monitoring includes flown X8i units, X12 for stage monitoring, and dedicated systems for the DJ booth and terrace areas. Signal distribution is handled via Milan-AVB, with control from LA7.16i amplified controllers and an LC16D format converter.
Operational needs, including variable audience heights and busy holiday schedules, were key design considerations. The system’s decentralised layout is designed to deliver even coverage across complex zones without overspill to neighbouring properties.
Markus Drols, event technology specialist at Babbel & Haeger, said: “The architectural constraints at Bierkönig presented complex challenges. The decentralised approach wasn’t just a design choice – it was the only way to achieve the coverage uniformity and sound quality this legendary venue deserved.”
A custom matrix control app was developed to simplify operation across multiple zones. Since reopening, the system has allowed Bierkönig to expand its programming without additional rental PA, while receiving positive feedback from artists.
Nico Decker, event technology specialist at RheinlandAkustik, added: “We achieved precisely what the client envisioned – even sound distribution that enhances every performance while respecting the surrounding community.”
