KV2 Audio powers The Lion King into its next chapter in Hamburg

Stage Theatre im Hafen deploys point-source system across main PA, low-frequency, delay and surround duties as production celebrates its 25th anniversary

Stage Entertainment has completed a major audio upgrade for The Lion King at Hamburg’s 2,030-seat Stage Theatre im Hafen, deploying 78 KV2 Audio loudspeakers as the long-running production celebrates its 25th anniversary.

Specified by sound designer John Shivers, the new system replaces an ageing installation and was designed to improve vocal intelligibility, coverage and low-frequency performance while supporting the production’s soundtrack and immersive sound effects.

The main PA comprises two VHD2.0 mid-high systems on each side of the auditorium, arranged as upper and lower systems, with VHD1.0 downfills extending coverage into the lower seating areas. VHD2.16 subwoofers provide upper-bass extension, while EX12 loudspeakers provide additional left and right infill.

Low-frequency reinforcement includes six ground-stacked VHD2.18J subwoofers and two centrally flown VHD2.21 subs operating in a cardioid mono configuration. Two SL412 systems provide centre downfill and delay coverage.

A further 51 CS6 loudspeakers are deployed across under-balcony delay and surround duties, with EX10 systems providing additional outfill coverage and four ESD25 loudspeakers integrated into the front lip of the stage as front fills.

“Vocal intelligibility was a critical consideration for such a globally recognised story and soundtrack,” said Shivers. “Each member of the 2,030-seat theatre should experience every word or musical note without compromise.”

The installation was carried out by Stage Entertainment’s technical production management team with support from the theatre’s local sound department.

The new system will also feature in a behind-the-scenes technical tour at LEaT con on October 7, led by Stage Entertainment and KV2 Audio.
