JBL all-weather loudspeakers for Headingley stadium

The rugby stadium, which is home to Leeds Rhinos and Leeds Carnegie rugby teams, has successfully upgraded its audio solutions over a short period of time thanks to integrator TG Baker and Harman Pro distributor Sound Technology.

UK-based stadium sound specialist TG Baker has upgraded the audio capabilities of the South Stand at Headingley stadium – home to both Leeds Rhinos Rugby League Club and Leeds Carnegie RUFC – with JBL AWC 129 loudspeakers.

The 6,000-capacity South Stand at Headingley, which has stood since 1932, required updating to provide full-range, uniform coverage to cater for the ever-growing demand for entertainment quality sound systems. The system also had to provide intelligible speech reproduction to meet current standards.

With time of the essence – the system having to be ready in eight working days in time for the visit of another rugby league team (Catalan Dragons) – UK-based Harman Pro distributor Sound Technology was contacted to supply the equipment.

A total of ten JBL AWC 129 all-weather loudspeakers – spaced equidistant along the length of the stand – were mounted on their own U-brackets with secondary fixing. These were specified by Jason Longworth, regional sales manager at TG Baker, together with new front end control equipment and dual redundant DSP units.

Key factors in the selection of the JBL solution were said to be the SPL’s it could generate, together with the LF extension and pattern control.

“The cabinets are weatherised as standard, provide uniform 90° x 90° dispersion and can be run straight of the box without requiring too much EQ to make them sing,” commented Longworth.
