The first of the new 3D active stereo projectors in Europe have been ordered by Virtalis as part of a £1.5 million contract issued by the University of Northampton. One WU7 WUXGA (1920 x 1200) resolution device has already been installed in the Virtalis ActiveWall system at the University’s Development Suite, which will enable technicians to become acquainted with the technology prior to the commissioning of the new ActivCube later this spring.
Equipped with a 0.67:1 wide-angle lens, the existing WU7 operates in a wireless-tracked configuration behind a 2.15m (H) x 3.4m (W) display. The Virtalis contract will also contain multiples of the WU7, along with Christie Mirage HD12 projectors.
Providing a specification that includes 6,600 ANSI lumens, a full suite of specifically designed lenses and optional ChristieTwist module for internal image warping and edge-blending, the Christie Mirage WU7 is said to enable “a new level of compatibility with computers” and infrastructure that supports active stereo, up to 120Hz output.
“The WU7 is a useful incremental improvement to what is a very well-understood product – it’s a platform we know and trust,”said Virtalis technology director Andrew Connell. “For immersive systems the WU7 is great. When you want to stand in front of an image and interact with your own body, the WU7 is perfect as it delivers a full-length, floor-to-ceiling image without the width. For single-channel systems we foresee a lot of people going for this option, just to get that extra height.”
Meanwhile, in other Christie news, the company has announced changes to its sales structure following the launch of MicroTiles at ISE2010. Intended to ensure this product area is given the “appropriate” focus, the developments see Joe Graziano fulfil the new role of market development manager – MicroTiles, while James Belso has been appointed to serve as UK channels sales manager.
Regarding Graziano’s new role, Christie EMEA vice president Dale Miller commented: “Since joining Christie in 2007, Joe has reshaped the UK AV channel and grown our business considerably. I am confident he will bring focus and determination to his new role and ensure MicroTiles is a major success for Christie in EMEA.”
