Case study – The Modulator lights up the RIBA

A new three month exhibition of the 21st Century Light Space Modulator, an installation by Jason Bruges Studio, sponsored by Havells-Sylvania, opens at Royal Institute of British Architects. Following its spectacular display at London’s South Bank Centre, the 21st Century Light Space Modulator, is now taking centre stage in a new exhibition at the headquarters of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), 66 Portland Place, London W1. Previously on display under the rumbling commuter trains of Hungerford Bridge, the inspiring installation, designed to react instinctively to motion and activity in its surrounding environment, was created by Jason Bruges Studio and commissioned by Concord, the architectural lighting arm of [email protected][email protected] urban intervention artwork, which for three weeks transformed an underused section of the South Bank into a colourful, lively and interactive space, will now go on display at RIBA, where spatial and human interaction will continue to be a central component of the installation. In this exhibition, Jason Bruges Studio will open up the design process and demonstrate how the space was brought to life using a variety of different materials, colours, light effects and sensory-based technology. Highlighting the project from design concept to reality, visitors will be taken through each unique stage of its development and show the impact that an urban spectacle can have on generating positive conversations and uplifting the urban environment in unexpected ways. Paying homage to László Moholy-Nagy’s 1930s work, Light Prop for an Electric Stage, the Modulator was conceived as a visual representation of the Havells-Sylvania philosophy: a fusion of invention and innovation, and eastern and western influences, which have the power to transform space through the use of [email protected][email protected] Bruges, creative director of Jason Bruges Studio, commented: “The 21st Century Light Space Modulator explores not just the relationship between space and light, but also people’s behaviour within a space.
