The University of Birmingham has upgraded several of its learning spaces with Avocor display technology, working with integration partner GVAV and its in-house AV team, LRAT, to replace ageing projection equipment across the campus.
The centrepiece installation is a DVLED X Series display in SportEx LT1, one of the university’s flagship lecture theatres. The room previously relied on a dual projection setup that made viewing difficult from the back rows. The X Series was selected for its brightness and contrast, with the installation also offering a logistical advantage over projection – avoiding the need for specialist scaffolding.
Two further spaces, Muirhead 112 and Y3 G28, were reconfigured as collaborative learning environments using Avocor K-Series 55in displays – eight screens in the former and five in the latter. Students can connect personal devices directly to the displays, while lecturers can monitor and share content across all pods simultaneously.
In Muirhead 109 and 118, a dual-display configuration pairs a 98in K-Series screen for primary teaching content with a secondary 65in screen that can either mirror the main display or operate independently for group work.
James Ball, AV designer and project lead at LRAT, said: “Some of our older rooms were saddled with dim, non-interactive projection systems and related connectivity issues. Lecturers had become reluctant to use the technology, and students could find the group-work experience frustrating. Our goal was simple: to improve the visual and learning experience for all.”
