Amadeus Acoustics tech upgrades German concert hall

ART platform deployed at Tonhalle Düsseldorf, a former planetarium and home to Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra, to deliver active acoustics, immersive sound and voice lift capabilities

Amadeus Acoustics has supplied its ART platform for an acoustic upgrade at the Tonhalle Düsseldorf, in Germany, replacing an ageing electronic reverberation system to address longstanding performance issues at the historic venue.

The Tonhalle, originally built in 1926 as a planetarium and now home to the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra, presents significant acoustic challenges. Its dome and curved side walls create unpredictable sound reflections, requiring careful control of early reflections while preserving the hall’s character.

The upgrade is built around Amadeus Acoustics’ ART:Hub2 hardware and ART::AP (Active Acoustics Performance) module, designed to deliver active acoustics management, immersive sound and voice lift. The system is said to integrate with the hall’s existing inventory of 64 microphones and 96 loudspeakers, with new power amplifiers and microphone preamplifiers added where necessary.

Specially designed presets allow the Tonhalle to adapt to different performance requirements, covering rehearsals, orchestral concerts, choral works, sacred music and 3D audio applications.

Acoustic planners Peutz Consult, who also worked on the original 2005 system, conducted listening tests and demonstrations before recommending Amadeus Acoustics for the project, with Thomann commissioned to carry out the installation.
