Alcons Audio has extended its Digital Cinema sound system offering with the announcement of the CR3 three-way pro-ribbon cinema system. This is aimed at medium sized applications, “where excellent projection control and superb, 1:1 accurate, non-compressed digital sound reproduction is required”, says the company.
The CR3 is designed exceed all requirements of current and future Digital Cinema sound formats. “With the Digital Cinema standard of 24-bit, up to 16 channels of PCM non-compressed audio now becoming reality, new challenges have arrived for existing equipment,” says the company. “Upgrading with just higher powered versions of existing solutions is just not enough to benefit from the new audio standard: speech, music and effect should be reproduced with non-compressed non-coloured detail, with lowest distortion and fullest digital dynamics.”
Using patented Alcons pro-ribbon transducer technology, the CR3 offers a linear response to above 20.000Hz that is described as unique, and the absence of a compression mechanism is said to ensure the same tonal balance from the lowest to highest SPLs. The patented ‘Real-90’ horizontal dispersion of the pro-ribbon transducer produces a very stable sound field throughout the operating bandwidth, and widens the stereo experience for audience members seated on the far left and right.
The CR3 consists of a double RBN401 pro-ribbon HF driver array, two 6.5in mid-range drivers and two vented 15in woofers. The CR3 HF section has a 1600W peak power input.
The 40° vertical cylindrical projection of the HF section (including screen spreading compensation), in combination with the 10º pre-tilt, prevents unwanted ceiling reflections.
The bi-amped CR3 is powered and controlled by the ALC Sentinel amplified loudspeaker controller, which is covered by a six-year limited warranty.
Its shallow depth (35cm) means that the CR3 is space-efficient to mount, so that it might be possible to add an extra row of seats, says Alcons.
