Adamson SpekTrix in audio upgrade at historic Rialto Theatre

Constructed in the early 20th century, the Rialto Theatre is said to be one of the most iconic buildings in Montreal, Canada. The new, unobtrusive Adamson system helps preserve the architectural features in the historic venue.

Constructed in 1923-24 and designed by Montreal architect Joseph-Raoul Gariépy, the Rialto Theatre, which was inspired by the Neo-Baroque-style of the Paris Opera House, now incorporates a brand new Adamson SpekTrix loudspeaker system.

The theatre is said to be one of the most iconic buildings in Montreal, and is designated a ‘National Historic Site’ of Canada. Emmanuel Briffa, designer of over 60 Canadian movie houses, designed its Louis XVI-style interior. And over the years it has undergone many transformations, with one conversion attempt nearly resulting in the venue becoming a steak house.

Today the venue operates as performing arts centre, with open and inclusive, multilingual and multicultural productions. The theatre main floor supports 708 people in standing mode, 450 people in theatre row seating, 350 in cabaret style seating. In addition, it features a newly opened balcony, which holds an additional 450 seated people.

Technical upgrades at the 90-year-old venue included a brand new Adamson SpekTrix loudspeaker system powered with Lab.gruppen PLM with Dolby Lake processing. System design was provided by the co-technical directors at the theatre – Drew Malamud and Laurent Magne – with support from Adamson’s exclusive Canadian distributor, Montreal-based Theatrixx, which also provided the system.

In order to preserve the architectural beauty and clean sightlines, the ground stacked PA system is made up of four Spektrix 5º boxes mounted atop a double 18in cardioid Sub left and right of the stage with a single T21 Center sub covering the floor level.

The balconies feature a second SpekTrix system, this one is a flown SpekTrix sub with three SpekTrix 5º boxes underhang both at left and right of balcony. A Midas Heritage 3000 console for FOH, and a M7- cl 48-channel console for Monitors were also added with full Shure and Sennheiser microphone lines.

On stage, ten Adamson M series M12 and M15 wedges powered by Powersoft offer flexible monitoring for the various styles of performers and events, such as live concerts, film, dance and theatrical performances taking the Rialto stage.
