Smart Buildings 2016, part of UK Construction Week, takes place on 18-20 October at the NEC, Birmingham. During the show, the Smart Buildings Hub will host a comprehensive seminar schedule – featuring topics including the Internet of Things and connected workspaces.
Day one of the Smart Buildings Hub will kick off by looking at the integral role facilities managers should play in building design. Mike Packham, owner of Bernard Williams Associates and member of BIFM’s Operational Readiness Group, will outline the difference that involving a facilities manager can make to a building’s performance.
Also on the first day there will be a seminar that looks at how data within the universe of technology can be protected from potential attacks by tools and safeguards. This is followed by an exploration of ‘The “LiFi” Revolution’.
The second day begins with a panel discussion about ‘The Connected Home and Workspace’, which promises to get to the heart of what this really means and how we achieve it. Speakers include Iain R Gordon, president and managing director of KNX UK; Simon Buddle, education director for CEDIA; and Muir Baxter, international account manager – major projects at MDU & Hospitality, GIRA.
Other topics on the agenda for day two include ‘Getting the Most out of your Smart Buildings’ by Dr Martin Ganley – director, smart homes and buildings at the BRE; and what ‘The Future of Lighting’ has in store in the coming years.
The final day will be forecasting trends of ‘The IOT Revolution’. It is expected that by 2020, 64 billion devices will be connected to the Internet of Things, compared with 5.5 million devices connecting every day in 2016. This seminar will discuss the forecasts for the IOT and the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.
Also on the final day, Jeremy Towler, senior manager – energy & smart technologies at the Building Services Research and Information Association (BSRIA) will be discussing ‘Closing in on the Retrofit Challenge’.With 80% of all the UK buildings that will exist in 2050 already built, how can they be upgraded to become ‘smart’?
Focusing again on the workplace environment Jeremy Myerson, director at Unwired and leading researcher, author and activist in people-centred workplace design and innovation, will discuss how the rapid advance in technology is affecting the workplace environment in his seminar ‘How the tech industry is redesigning the workplace’.
