InstallAwards 2014 finalists – Residential category

Here are the finalists in the Residential category of the 2014 InstallAwards. The winners will be announced at a black tie event at the Hilton London Wembley on the evening of 12 June.

Best Project Award

  • Inspired Dwellings – Luxury Alpine Chalet

The team at Inspired Dwellings was tasked with installing technology for modern living at a luxury alpine chalet in France. Key specifications were remote access to heating/hot water and CCTV equipment as well as low-key fittings so the interior design was unaffected by the AV systems.

  • Kensington AV – Queens Court Penthouse

Full house control was integral for this project at a London penthouse apartment. The client wanted independent control of each room for lighting, shading, AV and HVAC systems, which was made possible by the implementation of Crestron MTX-3 remotes and TSW-750 touch screens.

  • Multizone – La Casa Del Arte

The house, which has with three generations living in it, wanted an intuitive, simple and easy to use solution for AV, multimedia, lighting, shades, security and other automated functions. The main focus of the project was to create a James Bond themed cinema room as well as a living room AV system that matched the striking interior design.

  • West London AV Solutions – Lakeview

The idea behind this loft conversion was to create a multi-functional home cinema room that showed little sign of the AV solutions in place. The team at West London AV solutions acoustically treated the room and found an innovative way to install the projector into the ceiling so it became almost invisible thanks to a Audipack mirror kit.

Teamwork Award

  • Cinema Rooms – Garage Conversion Cinema Room

An unused double garage became a top-of-the-range cinema room in this install by Cinema Rooms. The integrators worked closely with the room designer to create a space dedicated to cinema – offering discreet loudspeakers, LED lighting and fresh interior fixtures and fittings.

  • Inspired Dwellings – Luxury Alpine Chalet

Several obstacles were overcome by the team to ensure this project was completed on time. These included organising shipping and sourcing local hardware for a project at an altitude of 1,350ft; understanding of what technology is required for a luxury retreat; adapting logistical plans to suit the installation, particularly so when a product failed to arrive and emergency plans were put in place to find the item and drive it back up the mountain after engaging the services of an English-speaking plumber to overcome the language barrier.

  • Kensington AV – Queens Court Penthouse

Kensington AV had to work closely with the client which was a development company, meaning every piece of kit had to be carefully selected in line with the interior design and functionality of the space. Keeping to the specified budget was also a main objective due to the nature of property development work. However, Kensington AV did not compromise on the quality of the AV system and the control system.

  • Olive AV – Clerkenwell Penthouse

The team at Olive AV had to collaborate closely with the interior designer to seamlessly combine the space’s AV technology with plans for a modern apartment aesthetic. The project also had a very short lead time from initial brief to completion, according to the company, with project completed in around 6 weeks.

Star Product Award

  • Kensington AV – Queens Court Penthouse (Crestron Sonnex Multiroom Audio System)

Central to this install was the Crestron Sonnex Multiroom audio system which is a fully-scalable audio distribution system. It reduced the amount of cabling necessary for the install as well as providing low power consumption, advanced DSP with a maximum of 74 zones of audio.

  • Multizone – La Casa Del Arte (Waterfall Niagara loudspeakers)

Finding a loudspeaker solution that adhered to luxury design scheme led the Multizone team to select Waterfall’s Niagara series, which features loudspeakers encased in glass stands to offer an elegant aesthetic.

  • Olive AV – Clerkenwell Penthouse (Stealth Acoustics LR and SLR series loudspeakers)

The speakers from Stealth Acoustics enabled the team to keep the AV system low profile which suited the room’s minimalist design. The devices can be painted, plastered over, wallpapered or even wood covered to ensure they remain hidden in a room.

  • West London AV Solutions – Lakeview (Audipack mirror kit)

The Audipack Mirror-Kit allowed the integrator to conceal the projector in the acoustic ceiling. Images are projected onto the screen via a mirror, meaning there is a reduction is the projector’s operating noise.
