Dataton provides audio guidance for innovative installation

PICKUP audio guides from Dataton are in use for a major exhibit at the latest instalment of the leading art event the Venice Biennale.

PICKUP audio guides from Dataton are in use for a major exhibit at the latest instalment of the leading art event the Venice Biennale, which features a presence from 89 countries and is due to run through until November.

Fia Backström’s art installation in the Nordic Pavilion consists of 57 conversations with international cultural figures, addressing subjects including national identity. Sculptures chosen by participants to reflect the conversation are reproduced as metal cut-outs and teamed with an audio tour played on PICKUP guides, which are distributed to visitors. Pointing and clicking at a sculpture activates the relevant section of the audio tour.

The fresh dimension provided by the audio guide to the exhibit was readily acknowledged by Backström: “You can get additional layers or stories about an art-piece through the audio guide. It’s a medium that I would absolutely consider using again.”
