Willrich provides winning formula at Nurburgring

Germany’s Formula 1 race track the Nürburgring is something of a mecca for so-called petrolheads. Long established as probably the most challenging circuit in the world it attracts numerous people who want to try their hand at the course.

It was inevitable, then, that the Nürburgring would eventually acquire its own visitor attraction. The ring°werk is designed for the whole family, and the company responsible for the AV installation is the UK’s D J Willrich, which created separate controls for each individual attraction as well as one master portable control – giving staff easy control over individual attractions or the entire theme park from anywhere on the site.

The park is made up of 10 core attractions: interactive driving experiences using simulation; a 4D cinema that enables visitors to experience the legendary 24-hour race on the Nördschleife circuit; a shoot ’em up dark ride; a fully immersive revolving theatre showing the legend of the Grϋne Hölle (Green Hell); a trip on Nϋrbus, a mad bus tour of the track in a fully immersive simulation; a rollercoaster, and much more.

The reception/foyer features six 42in NEC LCD displays, with audio playback through 20 Bose Freespace 16 ceiling speakers. The main theatre is fitted with arrays of LCD displays, three rear-projection systems and two Christie HD-8K projectors projecting onto DNP screens: content comes from two Alcorn McBride HD Pro video servers. In the centre of the ceiling, a cluster of nine Christie SD+650 projectors is suspended, using edge blending to deliver a panoramic effect.

Show control is via Dataton’s Watchout system.
