Tannoy’s VQ sounds out the MU Hawks

test 9 November 2009

For the MU Hawks basketball teams-housing sports arena, PMK International was engaged to design and specify a PA and background music system capable of delivering high-quality, intelligible audio throughout the main arena.

Having employed Tannoy’s VQ Series on a number of recent projects, PMK opted to specify eight full-range VQ 60 enclosures at the MAC sports arena. The units are flown around the periphery of the playing area – one at each corner of the rectangle and one in the centre of each side, with each cabinet angled accordingly to provide even and controlled coverage over the required seating area. The four VQ 60s located in the centre of each side (not the corners) are augmented with VQ MD mid-bass devices.

In addition, a pair of VQ 100 loudspeakers have been flown downward-facing above the playing area to ensure direct and even coverage of the floor space, while a cluster of 16 VS 18DR subwoofers provides LF reinforcement.

The system is powered by QSC PL and CX Series amplifiers, while QSC Basis handles processing and network control. Allen & Heath GL-2400 and WZ14:4 mixers are also part of the set-up.

The audio installation was carried out by Pennsylvania-based Vistacom, which also fitted the new Daktronics centre hung video/scoreboard along with two corner video screens.

Tannoy’s Mark Flanagan told II that the MAC project constitutes “an exemplary demonstration of how VQ combines versatility with unrivalled acoustic performance. Its advantage in an arena like this is its class-leading directivity, allowing for an efficient system design using fewer boxes than would typically be required to ensure even and predictable SPL coverage. The point-source mid-high driver technology we’ve developed in VQ also lends itself to this kind of multi-purpose application where speech intelligibility is as crucial as musical performance, while its extreme sensitivity means high SPLs are achievable with very modest power requirements – all-important green credentials!”
