State of Independence – Helvar on the high seas

test 9 November 2009

According to Helvar, the versatility of the DALI-based systems led to their specification across the majority of public areas on eight decks of the ship. The control system incorporates a network of 920 Imagine routers, which are designed to run two DALI subnets, allowing a total of 128 DALI devices to be connected and, via its Ethernet backbone, multiple routers to be brought into a totally scalable network solution. This also allows the whole ship’s system to be managed locally or from a central onboard location.

Helvar’s 458 dimmer – which is available in eight, 16- and 24-channel versions – is also an integral part of the Independence of the Seas lighting set-up.

The specification of a "completely interchangeable network", noted Helvar’s Peter van der Kolk, allowed the company "to remain flexible to the needs of Royal Caribbean International right through to final fit-out, catering precisely to the needs of each area of the ship, as the construction project evolved. Importantly, we were able to do this without costly and time-consuming rewiring."

Helvar’s UK sales manager, Steve Buckley, told II: "This is the third Royal Caribbean liner lit by Helvar controls and the introduction of the 458 to the Helvar range this year was instrumental in the specification this time around – its modular nature enhancing the system yet further. It allows us to seamlessly blend architectural and commercial lighting, broadening the scope for scene-setting in applications such as this."
