Seaside security – keeping tabs on Asia’s Las Vegas

test 26 September 2006

Currently under construction, the Venetian Macao Resort Hotel, a $US1.8billion development mirroring its Las Vegas namesake, is the anchor property of the Cotai Strip of ‘Macao – Asia’s Las Vegas’. The Cotai Strip is a master planned development of resort casino properties on Cotai, an area of reclaimed land between the islands of Taipa and Coloane in Macao. It is scheduled to open in 2007.

The 10.5million sq ft Venetian Macao is a 3,000-suite resort including Hotel, casino, convention and meeting facilities, an events centre, restaurants and retail space. The casino will consist of 546,000 sq ft of gaming floor, which includes more than 6,000 slot machines and 700 games tables.

Dallmeier International, a joint venture between Dallmeier Electronic and CR Kennedy & Co, has been awarded a multi-million dollar contract to supply and commission a digital matrix surveillance system at the facility. Integral to the design of the Dallmeier solution is the principle of decentralised recording, which is said to offer considerable savings in relation to peripherals and network components, as well as economic and secure archiving. Dallmeier says that, comparing decentralised with centralised recording system solutions, the cost advantage is about 3:1 because of the significantly higher resources required for storage, network and failsafe reliability within a centralised recording solution.

Decentralised recording is carried out by Dallmeier’s DIS-2M streaming servers (digital video recorders) using the MPEG-2 compression format. Recorded data is written to two hard disks (per DVR) by mirrored recording. The standard hard disk stores seven days of recording (real time), while the second hard disk stores 24 hours of data as a backup.

Phase one of the Cotai Strip system comprises both fixed and PTZ (dome) cameras monitoring the casino, restaurants and hotel. Additionally, monitoring of the cameras from the installation completed in 2004 at the Sands Macao Casino will take place from the Venetian Macao control room.

Additional systems to be added later in adjoining hotel complexes will result in the network being the largest fully digital matrix casino surveillance system in the world.
