RealD bringing 3D cinema to major London hotel

test 13 July 2009

Visitors will be provided with stylish sunglasses in order to view 3D movies at the luxurious facility, which also houses a separate bar and reception area for pre-food film and drink.

An 8×3.8m adjustable screen, Barco 3K digital cinema projector, two Kiniton 35mm film projectors, a THX-certified surround sound system and a four-channel translation system are among the other core components of the May Fair Screening Room’s technical infrastructure.

The venue has also been equipped with an integrated IML Interactive audience-response system that enables visitors to take part in voting sessions and send text messages for display. This part of the installation also incorporates a microphone system with audience-focused cameras, and provides video and audio feeds to meeting rooms and special suites on the first floor for VIP or green room applications.

“People already tell us the Screening Room is better than going to the cinema in terms of viewing quality – let alone the experience of sitting in such a wonderful, luxurious arena with the very finest food and drink on offer,” commented general manager Charles Oak. “We are now building on this reputation with 3D to give unforgettable entertainment.”

The project takes place during a period of unprecedented adoption of 3D cinema technology across Europe.

RealD Europe MD Bob Mayson told II: “RealD is Europe’s leading 3D provider and we’re seeing exponential growth in the territory, expanding 400% in the first half of 2009 alone. This rapid expansion is a testament to the extraordinary popularity of 3D cinema among moviegoers. We expect the growth of RealD 3D to continue to accelerate as a result of the fantastic line-up of 3D films this summer and beyond. In Europe, there are over 2,000 RealD 3D screens under contract and over 750 RealD 3D screens installed today. RealD is the UK’s leading 3D cinema provider, having partnerships with top exhibitors including Odeon, Cineworld, Vue and more.”
