Irish integration firm Lifestyle Electronics has created a smart home system centred around on network infrastructure from Pakedge, as part of the dramatic renovation of an old country estate in Waterford in the Republic of Ireland.

All the modern home comforts have been digitally integrated, such as underfloor heating, a whole-house AV system complete with invisible speakers, and a security system – all of which can be monitored and controlled remotely by the owner from his main home in Asia.

As well as having remote access to the property when he is away from Ireland, it is also important for the owner to remain connected to the outside world when he is at the property – as well as being able to stream movies or music. All of these features require a strong and reliable data network. Bernard Casey from Lifestyle Electronics selected products from networking specialist Pakedge.

“As part of the project, we upgraded the property’s internet connectivity to a point-to-point service which is linked directly to the Atlantic cables. This direct connectivity in conjunction with the Pakedge router has enabled us to provide a stable and robust network, capable of providing unparalleled performance,” said Casey.

The ability to monitor and access the property remotely is now a simple matter. If any part of the network fails, custom alerts via SMS, email or through Pakedge’s BakPak app can notify the owner or installer, allowing network problems to be addressed immediately.

Data security is also an important consideration. The K60D Pakedge router, which is for designed for medium to large home networks as well as small businesses, router comes equipped with built-in security functions to protect data, offers Advanced Threat protection and features what is claimed to be the industry’s best firewall. Additionally, the ASIC chipset is said to offer unparalleled speed and performance.

Networked audio visual systems can be put under strain with the amount of traffic on the network – particularly when content is streamed; with multiple dwellings on the estate that can potentially demand bandwidth simultaneously. The Pakedge router comes with application control, and works in conjunction with the SX range of Pakedge switches so that network traffic can be prioritised to optimise performance.

Casey added: “Working with older properties means that you encounter thicker walls, uneven surfaces and differing room sizes, all of which can impede the strength of the Wi-Fi signal.”

Pakedge’s wireless access points can overcome this problem. Lifestyle Electronics chose the W6 range for its high power and versatility, providing enterprise-grade wireless coverage and signal strength. Mounting options include ceiling, wall, desk, rack mount or even outdoors.

The owner now plans to extend the use of technology to five additional cottages that form part of the estate.

Casey is equally impressed. “Pakedge products have allowed us to do so much more with a lot less hassle and a lot less cabling. Integration with the KNX and Savant based home automation system was simple and the products offer fantastic reliability which is great for me and my client.”
