A new 4K digital signage media player has made its debut on the BrightSign stand at ISE 2014. The company claims to be the first to deliver native 4k H.265 playback at 60fps and a resolution of 3840 x 2160.

BrightSign’s new player accepts H.265-encoded content and delivers 60fps output via HDMI 2.0. Elemental Technologies supplies the HEVC encoding horsepower within the player.

“Our aim for ISE is to make sure people understand what true 4K is,” explained Jeff Hastings, CEO at BrightSign. “There’s a lot of talk about 4K, but what we’re talking about here is full frame-rate video 4K. It’s a very different kind of thing,” he added.

“The player brings together two big new standards, H.265 compression and HDMI 2.0,” added Hastings. “If you don’t have that combination, the bit-rate is going be high, the image quality won’t be as good and you won’t get the frame rate.”

Hastings sees 1080p fading quickly in the commercial sector. “By the end of 2015, everyone will be buying 4K screens. In this space, everything is delivered over the internet so you can get to a 4K workflow with no new infrastructure.”
