InstallAwards 2014 finalists – Sports/Performing Arts category26 March 2014
Here are the finalists in the Sports/Performing Arts category of the 2014 InstallAwards. The winners will be announced at a black tie event at the Hilton London Wembley on the evening of 12 June.
Best Project Award
- AMX – Birmingham Hippodrome
The start of 2012 saw the Birmingham Hippodrome, which has an annual attendance of 500,000, embark on a £1.2million refurbishment project. That budget catered for a brand new state-of-the-art digital signage system that needed to provide an immediate visual impact for the theatre as well as acting as a medium for delivering information about forthcoming and coming shows.
- eyevis – Digital advertising boards for basketball
The Walter Tigers basketball team, based in Tübingen, Germany, required a new digital signage system to adhere to new regulations from the German Basketball Bundesliga, of which the team is a member club.
- Meyer Sound – The Golden Hall, Musikverein
A new new voice reinforcement system was required for the Golden Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna, which is home to the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The new system overcame issues with reverberant room acoustics to deliver the necessary speech intelligibility from loudspeakers that aren’t compromising to the interior design.
- Renkus-Heinz – De Grote Post
Located in Ghent, Belgium, the former Oostende Post Office, which seats 431 people and offers an array of music, dance and traditional theatre performances, became the first venue in Europe to install the new VARIA modular point source line array from Renkus-Heinz.

- AMX – Birmingham Hippodrome (AMX Inspired Signage)
The AMX inspired signage solution allowed not only the creation of a comprehensive digital signage network, but also local control over screen content via eight-button AMX Novara keypads working in conjunction with localised AMX Inspired Signage players. AMX’s NI-2100 central controller, meanwhile, allows all the screens and players to integrate, forming one unified digital signage solution.
- Casio – Face to Face (Casio XJ-M145 projector)
Casio’s XJ-M145 Signature projectors were selected and six models deployed for Tom Oxley’s ‘Face to Face: Moving Portrait’ exhibition at London’s Royal Albert Hall. Several features of the projector were highlighted as integral to its operations and thus the projects success, including the ability to use the projectors in any orientation; solid state light source which was able to compete with ambient light conditions; depth of viewing through multiple brightness features on the projector; and high definition output that allowed easy HD workflows via component video and HDMI inputs.
- eyevis – Digital advertising boards for basketball (eyevis 55in LCD video boards)
The new LCD video boards are based on eyevis 55in Seamless-LCD monitors. They are equipped with Full-HD resolution and Direct-LED-Backlight, which allows for a very homogenous depiction of image contents. Each of the boards provides an image area of 1.2m width and 70cm height. Through the thin frame of the single displays there is only a 5.7mm wide
- Renkus-Heinz – De Grote Post (Renkus-Heinz VARIA)
Most traditional line array systems would have required many more cabinets to provide even coverage across the entire seating area. The VARIA’s variable coverage patterns enabled system designers to configure a system with fewer boxes than a traditional line array. It’s very compact and yet it sounds like a much larger system, according to the company.
