Godfather director puts faith in SIM2, Meyer Sound

Five-time Oscar-winning director Francis Ford Coppola (pictured) employs SIM2 projectors and Meyer Sound monitors as part of his AV infrastructure. SIM2 Multimedia has announced that the director – whose cinematic milestones include all three episodes of the Godfather trilogy as well as Apocalypse Now and cult favourite Rumble Fish – will be part of a global marketing campaign this year.

From the late ’90s onwards, Coppola concentrated on other artistic and business pursuits but has returned to film-making in recent years for Youth Without Youth and Tetro. Pursuing his vision of a digital workflow, Coppola edited both films using Apple’s Final Cut Pro system.

As part of this continuing interest in the latest technology, Coppola sought a new projector to use at his family’s American Zoetrope studio in San Francisco and on the road during the shooting process. Having been introduced to SIM2, he auditioned an HT5000 in his personal studio and decided to purchase the projector on the basis of its compact size, colour reproduction and crisp picture quality. The director – who now has two HT5000s, one for the studio and one for home – quickly put the SIM2 unit to work during the latter stages of work on Tetro.

Since that time, he has visited the SIM2 factory in Italy and found out more about the company’s production methods.

"I have owned many projectors in my life: SIM2 is now in both my studios and my home," he commented.

"We write an important page in our history as we proudly reveal our relationship with Francis Ford Coppola," said SIM2 Multimedia president Maurizio Cini. "Mr. Coppola, like SIM2, is a perfectionist always striving to be at the forefront of his craft. His productions are not just movies; they are real masterpieces. At SIM2, we share the same vision which is why we both chose to walk this path together."

Meanwhile, in a separate development, a Meyer Sound Cinema Experience monitoring system has also been installed at American Zoetrope. The monitors have already been used to mix Tetro and the forthcoming film, Somewhere, from Francis’s daughter, Sofia Coppola (Lost In Translation, The Virgin Suicides).

"I’m very impressed with the effortless power and clarity of sound of the Meyer Sound cinema system," said (F) Coppola. "If only every theatre had a system like this, they would have the same remarkable experience I have on my stage."
