Glass speaker manufacturer keeps the new ideas flowing

test 28 April 2010

Niagara (pictured) is the new flagship glass loudspeaker product from French specialist manufacturer Waterfall Audio. The result of three years’ R&D, Niagara features an enclosure of 3/4in thick diamond glass and a height of 3ft 11in. The Diamond Glass construction allows the speaker’s driver “to appear to float in mid-air”.

Available in the UK via Invision UK at an RRP of £25,000, Niagara features custom-built mid/bass Atohm drivers equipped with patented ADT (Acoustic Damping Tube) as well as the Glass Horn Tweeter, which is mechanically decoupled from the main enclosure. The fabrication process behind the Glass Horn Tweeter entails more than 10 hours of intense machining and hand-finishing, with the resulting component being “so delicate that it’s packaged separately for shipping in a specially designed padded box to ensure the ultimate security”.

The mid/bass drivers and base foundation are covered in highest quality, hand-stitched Nappa leather – the luxurious material typically employed by automotive brands such as Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche for its smooth grain, softness and durability.

Collectively, Waterfall says that Niagara speakers “will astound their owners and transform a room into a concert hall with their detailed, vibrant, naturally open sound, all supported by an ultra low-frequency passive driver in a down-firing position in the Niagara’s solid aluminium base”.
