Christie at the Beeb

test 1 September 2009

Special custom brackets devised by system integrator AVAT Ltd enabled the company to realise a design conceived by architects DEGW that saw five Christie dual-lamp, single-chip DLP projectors spaced equally around a circular truss to deliver 360_ rotating segmented and edge-blended images onto the BBC globe.

Content – which ranges from promotional loops to live news coverage – is created and delivered from two third-party media servers, which handle the processing and soft-edge blending. The entire network operates under Crestron master control via RS-232, with programming by AVAT.

The need to ensure reliability and the appropriate levels of brightness informed the selection of the DS+655s.

“We have met DEGW’s design brief and hopefully delivered the wow factor,” said AVAT’s Vic Woodcraft. “Because the natural surface has the necessary gain for projection, there is no hotspotting – and it’s a testament to the DS+655s that they perform [with] such high clarity despite the high brightness.”
