A new Canvas for the University of Hull

The University of Hull will implement Canvas as its new, modern and accessible virtual learning environment (VLE). Created by Instructure

The University of Hull will implement Canvas as its new, modern and accessible virtual learning environment (VLE). Created by Instructure, a software-as-a-service (Saas) company, Canvas is a cloud-based learning platform that creates a dynamic learning environment for both educators and students. It is built to meet the requirements of digitally-engaged students and university teaching staff.

The new system will be operational this year and was selected after an extensive evaluation of VLE options and in response to feedback from staff and students.

Professor Alan Speight, pro-vice chancellor for education at the University of Hull, said: “We want to give our students and staff the best possible learning and teaching experience. Working with Instructure to integrate the Canvas virtual learning environment at the university places us at the forefront of technology-enhanced learning. It is a key part in delivering our ambitious strategy to provide an excellent and inspiring student experience.”

The University of Hull team that led the process wanted to choose a new campus-wide VLE that would further enhance the high-quality learning experience at the university, to bring even greater benefits to students and staff.

Jessica Oshodin, a third-year psychology student at the University of Hull was part of the team that tested Canvas. She explained: “I’m really pleased that the university is going to implement Canvas. It’s really easy to use and will make studying and learning at Hull a great experience. It’s exciting to know that you have influenced the choice of the university’s virtual learning platform.”

Heather Kane, vice president of international markets at Instructure said: “We’re excited to provide the University of Hull a rich, unified digital learning experience for its students and faculty members. The Canvas integration at the University of Hull is yet another significant advancement for us as we continue to expand and invest in the Canvas community in the UK and mainland Europe.”

The University of Hull will begin delivering courses on Canvas in September 2015. It joins more than 50 educational organisations across Europe that use Canvas as their platform for teaching and learning.
